Changes Salon & Spa – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

What did your business look like before meeting Inspiring Champions?
Sales had steadily risen for 20-years and we were expanding our salon for the second time.  But I had over-extended myself in the expansion. My staff of 24 were all full-time and making good wages plus commission with no product costs. They had great benefits, free education and flexible hours.  I had always tried to be a great boss over the years and to give them the perfect place to work, but I felt I was being held captive by my staff.  They were controlling me

I had gone through multiple accountants for many reasons: my company taxes were filed wrong, locking horns on how to do things, not knowing enough about my books, or giving up on me and advising me to file bankruptcy.

My staff were making more money than me, and always did.  I had not been paid in two years.  No shareholders salary, no management wages and no commission for my sales.  Not even tips. I had to take a second mortgage for $100,000 on my house.  My boyfriend lent me $60,000 and had to support all my personal expenses.  It was degrading.

I felt like I was sinking, I had no money to pay other bills after I paid the staff wages which were at an all-time high. I stopped paying myself, my credit cards were maxed out and I was putting all my savings into the company.  My staff started quitting for various reasons. Sales started to drop, but expenses stayed high.  I really needed to upgrade our website which would cost more money. My checks started to get returned, even those for the staff.

I could not see the light at the end of the tunnel.  I struggled every day to come to work with a happy face.  This was not fun anymore. I had lost my passion. I was now on high blood pressure medication, not sleeping at night and I did not like my life.   But I felt that Changes Salon & Spa was a staple in Saskatoon and there would be void if we were not here.

Why did you decide to begin working with Inspiring Champions?
The ABA in Canada asked me to judge a hair competition in Calgary.  In the middle of the night prior to the competition, I felt so overwhelmed.  I was staying at a hotel and got up to work off my anxiety by walking around the room.  I walked and walked and walked for over 30 minutes.  I was starting to breathe fast.  I woke up my boyfriend with my pacing and he said it was starting to scare him.  While I felt so overwhelmed by my financial situation, I knew that giving up was not an option.

The next morning at the ABA, my boyfriend and I met Inspiring Champions Coach Gary Alquist.  He told us about the Inspiring Champions Cash Flow Champ in Edmonton during October of 2012.  I did not have the money but felt that if I didn’t get inspired soon, I was going to go crazy.

So my boyfriend and I went to that Cash Flow Camp to get inspiration, educate myself on how to not let my debt control me and how to get out of my financial situation.  I also needed to feel less stress, find a better quality of life and reignite my passion.

What systems, camps, etc. of Inspiring Champions have you used or participated in?
At Cash Flow Camp, we learned how to work smarter, not harder.  I engaged in this, as well as creating a ‘Dream Team’.  Learning how to hire ‘eagles’ was huge for me.  And I began to understand my financial statements.

After Cash Flow Camp, we started with Lance Courtney and the Top Gun Front Desk program.  We did all the modules. This helped all the staff to build a rapport with clients and to be consistent, from the moment they walk into spa until they walk out.
I signed on with Inspiring Champions Coach Randi Rose.  Coaching has consistently held me accountable, while pushing me forward and pulling things together for me.  Randi trained me to analyze my #’s so that I can make informed, educated decisions that work for me instead of putting everyone else first.
Champ Camp helped me understand pre-booking and how much money can be made just by doing this one thing every month.  It also helped me see the importance of coaching my staff.  They need a roadmap too, because in order to get somewhere, you have to know where you are at first. I also learned that you can increase you revenue 20-30% more by getting your clients to come just one extra time a year. Who knew !!!
I highly recommend Inspiring Champions’ partner Milano software for enhancing the everyday tasks of scheduling clients, along with producing reports to see how the business is actually doing on a day-to-day, weekly, monthly and yearly basis.
The Inspiring Champions’ Advanced Leadership Program has been a ‘wow’ moment for me.  I learned to coach my dream team on how to earn $100,000.00 a year.

Lauren Gartland-Roberts, the founder & president of Inspiring Champions, would even call me and inspire me to start my day with positive affirmations.  That has now become a habit for me.   She has shown me that I have many things to be thankful for.  I had to stop my stinkin’ thinkin’ as she would say.  I had to believe in myself and trust the process.

Where did your business start? Where is your business now?
Because of the bad tax filing from my previous accountant, I have been paying Revenue Canada $2K per month for the taxes, penalties and interest that I owed them.  I was recently informed that I have been exonerated of all penalties and interest which means I have, in effect, paid Revenue Canada off in full.  BIG BIG WIN and a HUGE weight off my shoulders.

My P&L is now current and other than some minor tweaking, is up to date and accurate and I have a new accountant and bookkeeper who are part of my dream team.

From 1st Qtr 2013 to 2nd Qtr 2013, my service sales are up 12% and my retail sales are up 26%.

Because of coaching with Randi and getting trained on the ‘Debt Reduction’ process, I can see my debt going down.  My debt is no longer controlling me. I actually see how I can legitimately pay $100K in consumer/operating debt by June 2014, have my boyfriend’s personal loan to the company of $60K be paid off by October 2014, and if I chose, have my own $250K loan to the business be paid off by January 2016. All this while paying $7K less per month towards debt than I am currently paying, which frees up the operating capital I need to manage the business.  Being able to see this as a possibility was mind-boggling.

I feel that Randi has gone beyond and helped me reach where I am today.  I feel so empowered.  Life is much easier, calmer and I enjoy going to work. I can now put myself first.  I have a life outside of work.  There is action in areas I have been stuck in for years – including signing the divorce papers I’ve been holding onto for six years.

What did you do to make this accomplishment a reality?
I learned that I needed to get a back bone and not let my staff control me.  I had to make some changes. I had already lost half my staff, so I had nothing to lose.
The first thing I did was add product cost and I saved $7,000 a month.  Then I changed my commission structure. I’ve since found a new accountant ,who is currently trying to get caught up with the year-end corporate statements. Continued to keep a strict eye on my account, as I should have been doing all along.
I had to put my salon on some kind of budget. I learned how to read my P&L.

What advice would you give to someone who is in the position you once were in?

Not every day of your job will be the greatest day ever. Some days you have staff phone in sick, with no notice. Sometimes clients bail, others are a pain. Or your landlord is on your back. Sometimes it might feel like you’re just going through the motions, wondering why you are doing this.  Going around in circles with no end in sight.  Wondering what is your purpose. Working for everyone else except yourself. You can hardly make ends meet yet you are working 12-hour days.  You believe the old saying ‘hard work reaps wealth’.  Well, where is yours?

The past few months, I have been reminded of  how much I love the industry , my salon and spa, and my job,  I look forward to going to work each day to see what adventure is in store for me now.  I have been re-inspired and reinvigorated to help my business soar to new heights and to help my staff be the best that they can be.

Take a class with Inspiring Champions, where the coach leaves you fired up.  I would recommend that any one that is in the position that I was in to dive in with both feet and trust the process. Even though I still have debt to pay back, I would push the pause button on my life right now because that’s how good I feel.
